First off, why is lubrication even important for a DTH drill? Well, a DTH drill works in some seriously tough environments. It’s constantly hammering and rotating deep down in the hole, which means there’s a ton of friction between the moving parts. Lubrication helps reduce this friction. Less friction not only makes the drill work more smoothly but also extends the lifespan of the equipment. Nobody wants to replace parts all the time, right?

Let’s talk about the different types of lubrication needed for the various components of a DTH drill.

Hammer Lubrication

The hammer is the heart of a DTH drill. It’s the part that does the heavy – hitting, literally. The hammer has pistons, valves, and other small but crucial parts that move at high speeds during operation.

We need a high – quality, heavy – duty lubricant for the hammer. This lubricant has to be able to withstand high pressures and temperatures. The high pressure comes from the impact forces during hammering, and the high temperature is generated due to friction. A lubricant with good anti – wear properties is a must. I usually recommend using a synthetic lubricant for the hammer. Synthetic lubricants have better thermal stability compared to mineral – based ones. They don’t break down easily at high temperatures, which is super important for a DTH drill that can get really hot during long – hours of operation. Also, synthetic lubricants have better anti – oxidation properties, which means they can resist corrosion and keep the hammer parts in good condition for a longer time.

Bit and Shank Lubrication

The bit is what actually breaks the rock, and the shank connects the bit to the hammer. These parts are also subjected to a lot of stress. The bit rotates and hammers against the rock, and the shank transfers the energy from the hammer to the bit.

For the bit and shank, a lubricant with good viscosity is needed. Viscosity refers to the thickness of the lubricant. A lubricant that’s too thin might not provide enough protection, while a lubricant that’s too thick can slow down the movement of the parts.

We also need a lubricant that can handle the abrasive nature of the rock. When the bit is drilling, it generates rock dust, which can get in between the moving parts and cause abrasion. A good lubricant should have anti – abrasive additives. These additives help to trap the dust particles and prevent them from scratching the metal surfaces of the bit and shank.

Air Compressor Lubrication

Most DTH drills are powered by air compressors. The air compressor has its own set of lubrication requirements. The compressor has pistons, cylinders, and valves that need to be lubricated.

The lubricant for the air compressor should be able to cool the compressor parts as well as lubricate them. During operation, the compressor generates a lot of heat. The lubricant absorbs this heat and helps in dissipating it. It also reduces the friction between the compressor’s moving parts, which improves the efficiency of the compressor.

We need to use a lubricant that’s specifically designed for air compressors. These lubricants are formulated to handle the high pressures and temperatures inside the compressor. They also have good anti – foam properties. Foam can reduce the effectiveness of the lubricant, so it’s important to have a lubricant that doesn’t foam up easily.

Lubrication Frequency

The frequency of lubrication depends on several factors. The type of operation is a big one. If the drill is being used for continuous, heavy – duty drilling, it will need more frequent lubrication compared to occasional, light – duty use.

The environment also plays a role. If the drilling is happening in a dusty or humid environment, the lubricant can get contaminated more quickly, and the parts might wear out faster. So, in such conditions, lubrication should be done more often.

As a general rule of thumb, for the hammer, I’d recommend lubricating it every 2 – 4 hours of continuous operation. For the bit and shank, lubrication can be done during bit changes, which usually happen every few meters of drilling depending on the type of rock. For the air compressor, the lubricant level should be checked daily, and the oil should be changed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, which is usually after a certain number of operating hours.

Lubricant Storage and Handling

Proper storage and handling of the lubricant are also important. Lubricants should be stored in a cool, dry place. Exposure to high temperatures and humidity can degrade the lubricant’s quality.

When handling lubricants, make sure to use clean containers and tools. Contaminants like dirt, water, or metal particles can get into the lubricant and reduce its effectiveness. Also, don’t mix different types of lubricants. Each lubricant is formulated with specific additives, and mixing them can cause chemical reactions that might damage the drill parts.

Monitoring Lubrication

It’s important to monitor the lubrication of the DTH drill. This can be done by checking the lubricant levels regularly. For the hammer and air compressor, there are usually sight glasses or dipsticks that allow you to see the lubricant level.

You can also look out for signs of poor lubrication. If the drill starts making unusual noises, it could be a sign that the parts aren’t being lubricated properly. Excessive wear on the parts, such as the bit or the hammer pistons, can also indicate a lubrication problem.
